Other options / add-ons to our

    combos, or alternative tours

    to the options suggested.

    Nothing is written in stone.

Cape Town Areas.

(Allow between 3 - 8 days – the most practical way is to add this option on to

the beginning, or the end of the safari)  Accommodation – we use various high

quality types of accommodation, depending on availability,  activities selected,

areas visited,  and client preferences.  Activities include the following:  whale

watching;  fishing;  visits to various historic wineries (including wine tasting of

course);  golf – (many lovely courses);   the world renowned  Kirstenbosch

Botanical Gardens;  day visit to Cape Town itself, taking in Chapmans Peak

Drive (scenic),  Carlos (great seafood restaurant!),  Table Mountain,  the

Waterfront  (working harbour with seals, many interesting shops, restaurants,

etc); take a ferry to visit Nelson Mandela’s prison cell on Robben Island

drive the beautiful Garden Route (this requires an extra couple of days); etc.

On the last day in the Cape, we usually lunch at “le Petit Ferme” in Franschhoek,

very scenic;  afterwards you would go to the airport to connect with your flight.

               Sun City.

Sun City is the original casino/resort in South Africa. Only 3 hours by road from

Johannesburg,  a true "oasis"  ( Allow an additional 2-3 days )

This option is often added on immediately after arrival, as it affords you the opportunity

to relax, rid yourself of jet-lag,  and acclimatize for a few days to maximise the rest of your

safari. It is a resort with wonderful accommodation and sporting/recreational facilities,

and a large game reserve. For people whose safari is going to be concentrated in the

Northern areas, this reserve contains game species not found in the North – eg white rhino, red hartebeest, springbok and a few others.

There is also plenty of other game,  including many elephants.

The golf course ( The Gary Player CC. ) is that played during the so-called “Million Dollar Challenge”, and is wonderful with game wandering on the course and crocodile-infested water hazards!  There is something to do here for everybody.

The Kalahari Gemsbok Park

(Allow 4-5 days) The Kalahari Gemsbok Park is situated in an arid desert, and the huge red sanddunes are magnificient.  The terrain is totally different  from anything else in Southern Africa and contains unique species of fauna and flora adapted specifically for desert living.  Examples are the gemsbok, springbok, and the black -maned lions unique to the Kalahari. The Kalahari has a beauty of its own, and the accommodation is either in the form of self-catering chalets, or a private tented camp which is totally unfenced. (We do our own catering and can discuss our catering preferences at the time). The Kalahari is reached by flying to Upington in the Northern Cape, and then two hour’s drive by road.

The Kalahari should ideally be visited during the months of  April – September,  as it can become uncomfortably hot from October to March.

Zululand & Battlefields Zululand & Battlefields

We highly recommend the Zululand area for any itinerary. Some of the magic places to visit: St. Lucia Wetland Park, Mkuze, Hluhluwe & Umfolosi Game Reserves, home of Black Rhino and Nyala, plus a multitude of other species. Tembe Elephant Reserve, Sodwana Bay & Kosi Bay, bordering Mozambique.  The Drakensberg.

Activities:  Game viewing(until you drop), Fishing, Turtle & Whale watching, Scuba diving & snorkeling, Visiting historical sites. The countryside around the settlements of Ladysmith, Greytown, Dundee, Vryheid (means freedom ) & Newcastle is covered with battlefields. Very popular amongst history buffs to spend 2 - 3 days in this area.
